Providing a safe, affordable home and a nurturing community where young single mothers can learn and grow.

About Us

The right place to learn, grow, get support, and become empowered.

Unsupported young mothers and children are especially vulnerable to the cycle of poverty and homelessness. For these mother-led families who face incredible uncertainty, Highbanks offers them hope by providing a safe home, opportunity for education, and the critical supports needed  to overcome their challenges and becoming thriving members of our community. It’s hope that brightens a young mother’s path, allowing her to heal and reach her infinite potential. By providing hope, we empower women to be their best self and create a brighter future for them and their children. Our goal is for these young moms to leave Highbanks as educated, resilient, confident & self-sufficient parents raising healthy, happy children.

Our mission is threefold.

To provide safe, affordable housing and a nurturing community where young families can learn and grow.

  • Safe & Affordable Housing

Our established housing model addresses the need for long-term, safe, and affordable housing  and is built on longstanding housing partnerships within Calgary.
  • Community Connection

Fact: Good community connections support good brain connections and healthy interests. We seek to provide a loving, supportive, and accepting environment where residents feel safe and empowered throughout their healing journey. The culture at Highbanks is based on thirteen touchpoints that we value and honour daily; not only inside the organization itself, but in the way we & our clients have committed to living our lives.

  • Learn & Grow

We eliminate barriers to growth by offering comprehensive programming that focuses on the development of healthy relationships, community connection, opportunities for financial stability & self-sufficiency, and individualized mental health supports, with therapeutic interventions that focus on trauma-informed modalities. We know that education is the key to increasing the economic, civic, and social success of the families we serve; therefore, all of our moms must be working towards their education in order to qualify for our program. In turn, we help them to identify their passions, provide 1:1 career planning & goal setting, and support with education costs.

Research & Evaluation

The success of our model is built on the latest research in epigenetics, brain story, and trauma-informed psychology. It is designed to mitigate the impacts of adverse childhood experiences and intentionally empower mother-led families in building Protective and Compensatory Experiences (PACEs) into the foundations of their lives in order to promote lifelong resiliency.
